ANATOMY OF CLAVICLE BONE ( PART -2 ) MUSCLE ATTACHMENTS AND OSSIFICATION

LATERAL END:-

Articular surface gives attachment to the joint capsule.

MEDIAL END :-

Articular surface gives attachment to :-
1. Fibrous capsule.
2. Articular disc posterosuperiorly.
3. Interclavicular ligament superiorly.

LATERAL 1/3RD OF SHAFT:-

1. Anterior border - deltoid origin.
2. Posterior border - trapezius insertion.
3. Conoid tubercle and trapezoid ridge - conoid and trapezoid parts of coracoclavicular ligament.

MEDIAL 2/3RD OF SHAFT :-

1. Anterior surface - pectoralis major origin.
2. Rough superior surface - sternocliedo-mastoid origin ( Clavicular head).
3. Inferior surface oval impression - costoclavicular ligament at medial end.
4. Subclavian groove - subclavius muscle insertion. Margins of groove - clavipectoral fascia.
5. Posterior surface ( medial end) - sternohyoid muscle origin.

 • BRACHIAL PLEXUS CORDS AND SUBCLAVIAN ARTERY PASSES BEHIND INFERIOR SURFACE.
 • NUTRIENT FORAMEN TRANSMITS A BRANCH OF SUPRASCAPULAR ARTERY.

OSSIFICATION :-

• First bone to ossify.
• Except medial end, it ossifies in membrane.
• Two primary and one secondary centre.
Primary centre appear in shaft between 5th - 6th weeks of intrauterine life.
• Fuses at 45th day.
Secondary centre of medial end appears during 15-17 years.
• Fuses with shaft at 21-22 years.
