ANATOMY OF CLAVICLE BONE (PART - 1)
INTRODUCTION :-
• long S shaped bone.
• Supports shoulder that arms can swing away from the trunk.
• Transmits weight of the limb to the sternum.
• Only long bone that lies horizontally and ossifies in membrane.
• subcutaneous.
• First bone to start ossifying.
BONE DIVISION
1. Cylindrical shaft
2. Two ends lateral and medial.
GENERAL FEATURES
SHAFT:- divided in two parts medial 2/3rd and lateral 1/3rd
1. LATERAL 1/3rd :-
 •Flattened from above downwards.
 •Two borders
 1. Anterior :- concave forwards
 2. Posterior :- convex backwards
 • Two surfaces:-
 1. Superior :- subcutaneous
 2. Inferior :- presents elevation called CONOID TUBERCLE and TRAPEZOID RIDGE.
 2. MEDIAL 2/3rd :- rounded having four surfaces.
 1. Anterior :- convex forwards
 2. Posterior :- smooth
 3. Superior :- Rough in its medial part
 4. Inferior :- Rough oval impression at the medial end. Longitudinal subclavian groove at lateral half. Nutrient foramen at lateral end of groove.
LATERAL AND MEDIAL ENDS:-
1. Lateral end :-
• Known as Acromial end.
• Flattened from above downwards.
• Bears facet for articulation with the acromion process of scapula to form ACROMIOCLAVICULAR JOINT.
2. Medial end :-
• Known as sternal end.
• Quadrangular and articulates with the clavicular notch of the manubrim sterni to form STERNOCLAVICULAR JOINT.
• Articular surface extends to the inferior aspect for articulation with the FIRST COASTAL CARTILAGE.
SIDE DETERMINATION:-
• lateral end flat and medial end quadrangular and large.
• curved shaft:-
1. Convex forwards medial 2/3rd .
2. Concave forwards lateral 1/3 rd.
• Inferior surface is grooved longitudinally in middle 1/3 rd.
SEX DETERMINATION:-
• Females:- Shorter, lighter, thinner, smoother and less curved than in males.
• females:- lateral end little below medial end but in males both ends are at same level or either slightly higher than medial end.
